The Best Turf Available
Everyone claims to have the “best” synthetic turf – so what’s the truth? The truth is that the great majority of turf is made by only a handful of manufacturers in the US and overseas. They all use the same few yarn manufacturers and there are even fewer providers of the primary and secondary backing! So to understand quality of turf, you must understand the types, grades and components of turf.

Types and Grades:
New, Seconds, Used are the three general types. Know which you are getting by asking these questions directly, “Is this turf you are selling me first-quality, factory seconds, overruns or used turf? Does it come with a printed warranty that I can see prior to purchase?”

Within these types most would break out the type further by whether the turf is an athletic field turf or landscape grass? The differentiating factor is whether the turf has a thatch layer (aka root zone layer) of curled yarn. Some athletic field turf does have a root zone and some landscape turf does not, so this is not a hard and fast rule. See example of the thatch layer in the photo below:

The grades of turf typically refer to the “faceweight” which is the weight of just the yarn in a square yard of turf. The “total weight” includes the weight of the primary and secondary backing. The higher the faceweight, the more dense the turf is, the nicer it feels under foot. Also, as logic would indicate, the more yarn per square yard, the more expensive. Understanding what the right faceweight and backing should be for a given application is what a professional turf company can offer to you. Contact us for this type of information.
To us, the “best” synthetic turf is using the right turf system for a specific application (planned usage) and installing/maintaining it correctly so as to maximize the turf’s life and maximize its value to the owner. Perfect Turf LLC and many other companies work on product development everyday. New colors of yarn, new combinations and designs, and new enhancements are being developed continually. The best advice for finding the best turf for your budget is to order a few samples from us, order a few samples from a couple other companies and see which you like the best for the price. Then see which company is going to provide you with the best support and that company will typically be your best choice.
